What is STL?

STL (Stereolithography) is the de facto standard file format for 3D printing and rapid prototyping. Developed by 3D Systems in the late 1980s, it represents the surface geometry of a three-dimensional object without including color, texture, or other common CAD model attributes.

The format works by tessellating the object's surface into a mesh of triangular facets. Each triangle is defined by a normal vector and three vertices, allowing slicing software to interpret the model for layer-by-layer fabrication.

Due to its simplicity and universal compatibility, STL remains the most widely supported format across various 3D printing technologies, including FDM, SLA, and SLS, ensuring seamless data exchange between design software and hardware.
